Stage Staff (Main theater & Studio B - ice rink)
Explorer of the Seas – Royal Caribbean
Ship life is very high paced and the workload can be heavy at times. Basically since you are on the ship you are technically "on" at all times.
A broad knowledge of the theater world and lingo are a must. Like I have said, everyday is fast paced and if you have to second-guess yourself… sometimes it could be fatal. The bigger ships have all the "toys" in automation. The stage staff is responsible for maintenance and helping the technicians.
During shows, the stage staff is responsible for the prep and movement of props and/or scenery. These are dogged into dog tracks so there isn't much time on the stage during a run of the show that could possibly be seen by audience members. We are also responsible for quick changes if need be.
In Studio B, which is the ice rink, the above is required but also a general knowledge of ice maintenance is needed. Unlike regular stage shows we have to prepare the ice for skating.
A great attitude is a must and you must be able to work well with other from different ethnicities and backgrounds (life wise and theater wise). The schedule is always changing so the ability to adapt to change quickly is a must.
